SUMMARY:Adjusting sexual recidivism risk estimates based on time offence-fr
 ee in the community
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, May 17\, 2024 for a presentation on Adjusti
ng Sexual Recidivism Risk Estimates Based on Time Offence-free in the Comm
 unity presented by R. Karl Hanson\, Ph.D.\, C.Psych.\n\nParticipants will
learn how to adjust assessments of sexual recidivism risk based on the num
ber of years that persons with a sexual offence history have been at-risk
in the community without committing a new sexual offence. The initial part
of the training provides an overview of the research and theory that just
ify the time-free adjustments. Participants will then be taught an empiric
al actuarial approach to making these adjustments using a pre-built EXCEL
file. As well\, the training will address how these time- free adjustments
could be reported in risk assessments.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n11am to 1pm Eastern
 via Zoom\n\n$75 per person\n\nRegistration is limited to 30 individuals.\n
\n2 Continuing Education Credits will be offered.\n\nParticipants are aske
d to download the time-free calculator onto their computers prior to the t
raining. It is available free of charge at https://saarna.org/research/ Sc
roll to the near the bottom for TIME FREE IN THE COMMUNITY CALCULATOR (EXC
EL).\n\nParticipants must have the capacity to use Excel during the traini
ng. It is recommended participants have access to multiple screens\, altho
ugh you may be able to utilize the "split-screen" method.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nTr
aining objectives\n1) Participants will learn the extent to which sexual r
ecidivism risk declines for individuals who remain sexual offence free whi
le at-risk in the community.\n2) Participants will learn how to set a thre
shold for very low risk for sexual offending\n3) Participants will learn a
n actuarial approach to estimating current risk by combining a) initial ri
sk estimates\, b) the number of years sexual offence free in the community
\, and c) whether they have been convicted of a nonsexual offence after th
 eir index sexual offence.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nPresenter description\n\nR. Karl H
anson\, Ph.D.\, C.Psych.\, is one of the leading researchers in the field
of risk assessment and\ntreatment for individuals with a history of sexual
offending. Originally trained as a clinical psychologist\, he was a resea
rcher and research manager in the area of corrections and crime policy for
Public Safety Canada between 1991 and 2017. Dr. Hanson has published more
than 175 articles\, including several highly influential reviews. He is t
he lead author of the Static-99R\, STABLE-2007\, and ACUTE-2007 risk tools
\, which are widely used for assessing the risk and needs of individuals w
ith a history of sexual offending. Based in Ottawa\, Canada\, he is curren
tly President of the not-for-profit organization SAARNA (Society for the A
dvancement of Actuarial Risk Need Assessment) and adjunct faculty in the p
sychology department of Carleton University (Ottawa).
