Megan Peña, MA, LLP

Director of Clinical Operations at Hope Network Behavioral Health Services
Megan Pena has a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University and a
Bachelor’s Degree in Interpersonal Communications from Oakland University. She is licensed as a
Limited Licensed Psychologist (LLP) in the state of Michigan. Megan has worked in child and adult
residential mental health programs as well as juvenile justice, correctional and civil commitment settings
since 2003. Megan is committed to the assessment, treatment and advocacy for persons requiring care
and has spent over two decades working with individuals and groups who have a history of various
forms of violence, including problematic sexual behaviors. She has been a member of ATSA since 2005
and a member of MI-ATSA since 2013. Megan is the current president of MI-ATSA and is also a board
member of the Michigan Federation of Children and Families and MRC Industries. Megan is the Director
of Clinical Operations for Hope Network.

Ronald Grooters holds a Masters of Social Work Degree from the Grand Valley State University.
Prior to receiving his master’s degree, Ronald received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from
Michigan State University. Early in his career Ronald primarily worked with adolescent sexual
abusers (assessment and treatment) while a senior clinician in two residential facilities. In these
facilities he became a team leader and provided training and supervision to residential staff and
therapists. Ronald has since been working with the Department of Corrections and Office of
Community Corrections on an outpatient basis, assessing and treating adult men who have a
history of sexual behavior problems. He has specialized testing experience with the ABEL and
LOOK Assessment instruments, various risk assessment protocols for men and boys struggling
with sexual and non-sexual violence and is certified to provide assessments using the
Psychopathy Check List Revised, ABEL Assessment and Look Assessment instruments. Ronald
is the director of clinical services through his own private practice at Homeward Bound
Therapeutic Services. This agency provides outpatient assessment and treatment services for
private referrals and court-ordered clients with sexual behavior problems. He is currently
assessing and treating clients both pre and post-conviction in several counties throughout
Michigan. Ronald is a clinical member of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers
(ATSA), and a board member of the Michigan chapter (MI-ATSA) where he had previously
served for ten years as president. Overall, he has over 30 plus years in the assessment and
treatment of sexual abusers.
Marissa Smits, LMSW

Clinician, Michigan Department of Corrections, Sexual Abuse Prevention Services
Marissa Smits is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing treatment services for individuals who have committed a sexual offense while housed in the Michigan Department of Corrections. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree with Honors in Psychology and Spanish and a Masters of Social Work from Western Michigan University. Marissa uses a trauma-informed and person-centered approach to work with clients. She has a passion for learning and applying new information in her practice to help people improve their lives. She is a SAARNA certified trainer of the Static-99R, Stable-2007, and Acute-2007 assessment tools. She has served as a board member of MI-ATSA since 2020 and is currently serving as the board Secretary.
David Berghuis, MA, LLP

David Berghuis holds a Master’s Degree in Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology
from Western Michigan University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Calvin University. He holds a
Limited License in Psychology (LLP). Early in his career, Dave primarily worked with victims
of sexual abuse and was a manager at a Community Mental Health clinic. In 2001 he started
Berghuis Psychological Services, primarily working with people with sexual behavior problems.
As the director of BPS, he oversees 15 clinicians providing outpatient services to those who have
sexually offended. BPS works throughout Mid-Michigan and West Michigan with several
satellite offices. He works with local, county, state and Federal agencies to assess and treat this
population. Dave has also written 10 books in the popular Practice Planner Series, including The
Severe and Persistent Mental Illness Treatment Planner, 2 nd Ed. Published by John Wiley and
Sons. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Chapter of The Association for
the Treatment and Prevention of Sexual Abuse (MI-ATSA), including the recent past President.
He is a Clinical Member of ATSA.

Staci Zonca, MA, LPC

Staci Zonca is a mental health therapist who has been working with individuals who have sexually
offended in both mandated and private therapy settings since 2015. Staci operates from a person-
centered and humanistic perspective, prioritizing the individual’s unique experiences, emotions, and self-
determination to foster personal growth and well-being. Staci’s passion for this work began during her
clinical internship and the majority of her professional career has been working in mandated programming through MDOC in an outpatient setting. She has experience and training in the Static-99R, Stable-2007, CPORT, ROSAC, and PROFESOR. Staci is currently a clinical member of the Association for the
Treatment & Prevention of Sexual Abuse (ATSA) and a board member of the Michigan chapter (MI-
ATSA).
Benjamin Schreur is a community probation officer in Allegan County, Michigan for the 48th
Circuit Court-Family Division. He supervises an intensive caseload of juvenile probationers
including monitoring and enforcing compliance with terms of probation and orders of the Court.
His caseload includes juveniles adjudicated for delinquent offenses such as Criminal Sexual
Conduct, other felonies, misdemeanors and status offenses. Benjamin oversees and monitors
adolescent sexual offender assessments, treatment and case management. Prior to being a
community probation officer, he was a treatment specialist at Cheever Treatment Center, a
juvenile residential placement, as well as a community surveillance officer in Kent County,
Michigan for the 17th Circuit Court-Family Division. Benjamin completed the Family Division
of Circuit Court Certification for Juvenile Probation Officers and Caseworkers, and Michigan
Juvenile Justice Assessment System (MJJAS, Ohio Youth Assessment System OYAS). He
received certifications in trauma affecting children, as well as secondary trauma. Benjamin also
earned certification as a gang specialist focusing on gang and violence prevention for school
administrators.
